With the introduction of the TRU-Balance 4 (TB4) seating system, users now have more choice than ever, but it’s important to note that TRU-Balance 3 (TB3) is still very much part of the range.
So, what’s the difference between TB3 and TB4, and how do you decide which one is the better fit? Let’s take a closer look...
TRU-Balance 3: A Proven, Versatile Seating System

TRU-Balance 3 is the seating system many Quantum users are already familiar with. It offers a strong combination of positioning and functional support, including:

What’s New with TRU-Balance 4?

TRU-Balance 4 builds on the strengths of TB3, adding several advanced features aimed at improving function, transfers, and ease of use. TB4 is currently available on the Stretto, Edge 3, and 4Front 2 power wheelchair bases. |
1. Dual-Actuator Articulating Foot Platform
Unlike the single-actuator system on TB3, TB4 uses dual actuators to allow the footplates to move independently of leg elevation.
This means:
- Footplates can lower all the way to the floor
- Users don’t need to flip footplates out of the way manually
- Caregivers can better support transfers
This feature is especially helpful for:
- Sit-to-stand transfers
- Squat pivot transfers
- Users who want more control over lower-limb positioning
It also allows fine adjustment of leg extension and articulation, improving comfort and positioning throughout the day.
2. Memory Seating Positions
TRU-Balance 4 introduces programmable memory seating, making it easy to move into frequently used positions at the touch of a button.
Users can store:
- Up to eight unique seating positions
- Two positions within each of the four profiles
Common examples include:
- Transfer positions
- Relaxation or TV viewing
- Vehicle access
- Cooking or functional reach
- Weight-shifting positions
Memory seating can be set up in two ways:

Synchronised - all actuators move together smoothly
- Sequential - one function moves at a time, useful for specific weight-shift techniques
This feature improves efficiency, consistency, and independence.
3. Power Anterior Tilt: A Major Advancement
One of the biggest additions with TB4 is power anterior tilt.
While power seat elevation helps with vertical access, anterior tilt offers something different:
- Improved forward reach
- Better balance during reaching tasks
- Reduced effort from the trunk and upper body
By gently tilting the user forward in a controlled way, anterior tilt helps bring the person closer to what they’re reaching for, rather than requiring them to lean or overextend.
